Project Type: Commercial

Stryker

The project included a new entrance and façade of custom steel framed glass wall along with an entirely new renovation of the first floor for offices and meeting areas. The existing structure was exposed for additional ceiling height and interest and provided a subtle allusion to the medical and technological aspects of the business.

With strong growth and expanding areas of service, Stryker needed additional space adjacent to their existing properties to house new administrative offices, training rooms and a mock operating room training facility.

The decision to buy the building where they rented space for their warehouse and distribution was a logical step in their growth.

Dunn Construction

The renovation of Dunn Construction’s home office created an energetic space and improved functionality through the use of glass and the reconfiguration of areas such as reception, conference rooms and break rooms.

Painted steel, polished concrete and strong yellow accents give the space an industrial style.

Custom wallcoverings of machines and process plants stretch down long corridors to illustrate the company’s identity and give visual texture and pattern to the space.

Integra Water

This renovation of an underutilized property houses Integra Water’s Headquarters.

Integra Water builds, owns and operates water and wastewater utility systems throughout the Southeastern US and Gulf Coast.

CCR has had the privilege to design two headquarters locations for the company.

Both were contemporary, modernist tenant renovations, but the multi-tenant buildings never allowed the company’s ideals to be realized. After investigating and providing plans and pricing for several buildings in downtown Birmingham, the ideal location was found in an old mechanical and plumbing contractor’s office.

This existing building allowed the owner’s love of light to be expressed through outdoor spaces and additional punched openings, while homages to the fluid nature of water abound throughout the interior office spaces.

Burr & Forman

This renovation of the uppermost level of Shipt Tower is the headquarters of Burr & Forman, a law firm operating throughout the Southeast.

Nods to the diamond and triangle as symbols of balance are found throughout the space and represent the balancing scales of justice.

The circulation path within the space leads to four large quadrant windows and brings the unique diamond form of the existing building to life and symbolizes the balancing scales of justice.

This path continuously connects each of the spaces, allowing for visual and acoustic privacy and natural movement throughout the floor during large or small functions.

The subtle gradient of the inner core’s wallcovering was used to provide additional acoustic buffering and represent the law’s ability to bring justice and light to dark and unresolved circumstances.

The design features a large cafeteria, classrooms for training and meetings, and a community room for events featuring a large tv for presentations.

Folding, nesting tables and rolling chairs help make these spaces versatile and each space is easily able to be re-configured for various group sizes and events.

The 2700 Building

The 2700 Building is a renovation of an under-utilized warehouse in the Lakeview District for Sloss Real Estate.

CCR punctured the tilt-up concrete building with new large glass panels and steel entry canopies to accommodate Dekalb office, a furniture showroom, two additional office tenants and the furniture warehouse.

Before
After

The steel and concrete structure was left exposed with lighting and ductwork highlighting the industrial nature of the spaces. The furnishings are open and flexible taking advantage of the glazing and views.

The mezzanine above the loading dock houses an unfinished future tenant space with south-facing windows opening to incredible views of Pepper Place and Southside Birmingham.

The results produced light-filled, collaborative spaces for the new tenants.

Spartan Invest

This historical renovation hosts the headquarters of Spartan Invest, Alabama Rental Property, and Green Rock in the heart of downtown Birmingham. Originally built in 1889 as a hardware store, the three-level building is a qualified historic building complete with original hardwood floors and masonry.

The intent of the design was to celebrate the building’s character, highlight its beauty and illuminate the utilitarian space through skylights and windows.

Utilizing a length-wise running wall allowed for the inclusion of private offices with glazed windows and doors to provide privacy and light.

Locally-sourced materials were used to reflect the beauty of the area, and each desk was handmade by a local artisan.

National Bank of Commerce

The interior renovation included a bank branch, new offices and support areas, board room and executive offices, break areas, restrooms, and lobbies.

The design was inspired by South Eastern historic banks with large expanses of Alabama white marble and monumental marble walls and columns.

Throughout corridors and common spaces, the concrete deck was left exposed to create volume and gesture to the dramatic height and grandeur of historic bank lobbies.

The Battery

The existing buildings and structural frames were rehabilitated to extend their service life well into the future. Replacement storefront windows were designed to maximize daylight while honoring the utilitarian history of the buildings. A bright yellow staircase and coordinating tenant entry doors were provided to contrast with the new exterior building finishes.

The Battery is an adaptive reuse of a collection of attached BEBCO (Birmingham Electric Battery Company) buildings previously used for automotive repairs and servicing located at 2nd Avenue South and 22nd Street.

Taking advantage of the timber-framed structural bones and thick load-bearing masonry walls, this building has been transformed into an energetic entertainment node in the city.

Before
After

The project included transforming the original structure into a newly defined building envelope, the development of multiple tenant spaces within the newly defined shell, and removing less valuable structures for an on-site parking lot.

The heart and soul of this redevelopment is a sheltered courtyard with timber framed structure and rehabilitated warehouse windows along the alley side of the courtyard.

RMR 4×4

RMR 4×4 is a renovation of an existing welding and fabrication shop into a luxury, pre-owned Land Rover dealership.

The owners of RMR wanted a place that could house their automotive inventory indoors as well as a space that could accommodate social gatherings for their many repeat customers.

Before
After

The office showroom has an industrial vibe with redwood plank accent walls, custom redwood cabinetry, concrete counter tops and a reclaimed galvanized wash basin sink that add warmth and character to the space.

Murals depicting the company branding and a new entry canopy revive the exterior of the building.

Large glass garage doors were added to provide fantastic day-lighting and the ability to change the showroom display cars easily.

-->

Ram Tool

Ram Tool consolidated their offices into the historic Hill Building, the original office building in the Continental Gin Development.

The building is composed of the original main concrete structure with steel and concrete wings added decades apart. The exterior walls were cleaned and new multi-paned insulated windows were installed.

Ram Tool, a construction material and tool supply company, sought to expose the construction history of the building to preserve the past and showcase the often hidden elements of construction.

The three-story building has one semi-subterranean floor which houses a grand hall for all employees to gather for events and dining.

The repetition of the block form throughout the building illustrates how blocks can form sturdy, inspiring forms, and structures.
