Smile-A-Mile, the non-profit that provides camps and other programming for children with cancer, has a new space in downtown Birmingham.
Staff moved into the 13,000-square-foot historic warehouse building at 1600 Second Ave. S. in January but the group held a ribbon cutting Thursday afternoon. The group is calling it “Smile-A-Mile Place.”
The renovated space includes multipurpose space, media room, kitchen, game room, meditation room, offices, conference room, gym and more.
Birmingham’s BL Harbert International led construction on the 1908 building, which included demolition, new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, exterior brick work, a new roof, slabs, elevator pit and shaft, among other things.”
We did not understand how invested we would become Smile-A-Mile staff and the families served,” John Hanson, BL Harbert International project manager, said in a press release. “This project is far more than a demolition and rebuild of facilities, its something we will carry forever. We were honored to assist SAM carry their mission forward.”
