The highly anticipated Box Row Avondale project, which will bring retail and restaurant space housed in shipping containers to Birmingham, has added something new into the mix.
Daniel Samford, principal with Golden Bell Capital, said the development now includes 4,656 square feet of office space, which was not in the original plans for the project.
In an email to the BBJ, Samford said they are looking for a few more retailers as well as tenants for the office spaces.
Box Row will now include 12,960 square feet of retail, 4,656 square feet of office, and 1,600 square feet of restaurant space.
Samford said the restaurant spaces are leased and will include lots of outdoor and common areas for seating. A full tenant list should be announced soon.
As previously reported, Box Row Avondale was announced in the fall of 2015 as a new concept that would bring a host of commercial tenants to the booming Birmingham neighborhood in shipping containers instead of a traditional building.
Golden Bell Capital took the project over from Blue Oak Development earlier this year.
"We're ready to get this thing across the finish line," Samford said in a previous statement. "No one can imagine how great this development is going to be."
Cohen Carnaggio Reynolds is the architecture firm on the project, and a contractor has not yet been announced.
The project is seen as a strong indication of the continued revitalization of the Avondale neighborhood that began several years ago. While commercial offerings like Avondale Brewery and a host of restaurants began the movement, residential and now office development has followed as the area continues to draw more young professionals.
Several blocks away, a new project called Avondale Works was recently announced that will redevelop an old industrial property into a 70,000-square-foot office campus. Additionally, UAB has moved 650 employees into a new facility located at 720 39th Street N., as we recently reported.
